Our client, a leading internet provider, was dissatisfied with their current
planning process. They had heard about several different approaches, but were
concerned about user acceptance and making the right choice. After defining
user requirements (by interviewing users and holding a brief series of focus
groups) we assessed all of the Best Practices in
Planning; including Rolling Forecasts, Balance Scorecard, Zero Based
Budgeting, VBM/EVA, Activity Based Budgeting. We matched the pros and cons of
each solution against the user requirements. We narrowed the list to two
choices, and went back to users (via focus groups) to solicit their view point.
Ultimately the decision was made to implement a hybrid solution, taking the
best of each approach. |

A survey of users taken before out project began, and one year
after, revealed a substantial improvement in user satisfaction. While just
under one third of respondent agreed with the statement "I am completely
satisfied with the current planning process" before, that figure rose to
almost two thirds.
